The official residence of the Governor-General of Jamaica, Kings House has stood on its Hope Road site since 1872 when the capital moved from Spanish Town to Kingston. The original building was destroyed in the 1907 earthquake and rebuilt in 1909 to designs by Sir Charles Nicholson. Set in extensive gardens on what was once Somerset Pen, an Anglican bishops estate, it has hosted royalty and heads of state from around the world.
